Vehicle Accident
On April 17, 2014, at 5:27 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on White Pole Road near the intersection of Lansing Road. A 2001 Chevy Impala driven by Michael J. Schrader, 25, of Lincoln, NE, was driving southbound on White Pole Road when the driver swerved to avoid an animal, causing the vehicle to cross the center line and enter the east ditch and roll onto its top. The driver was transported to CCMH via Medivac. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3500.

On April 16, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Shawn Joseph Williamson, 36, of Anita, IA, on a charge of Driving Under Suspension. Williamson was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $300 bond.

On April 12, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ehren Michael Mardesen, 29, of Anita, IA, on a charge of Interference with Official Acts. Mardesen was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $300 bond.

Engles was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On April 11, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Devin Allen Foote, 22, of Griswold, IA, on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for Harassment 3rd Degree. Foote was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $300 bond.

On April 10, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tyanna Karee Monrreal-Robles, 29, of Council Bluffs, IA, on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Monrreal-Robles was taken to the Cass County Jail where she remains held on $10,000 bond.

On April 7, 2014, Jared Mark Smith, 36, of Atlantic, IA, turned himself in on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for Assault w/Injury. Smith was booked into the Cass County Jail and released later that day on $1000 bond.

On April 4, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jerry Lee Edwards, 54, of Cumberland, IA, on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine) (3rd or Subsequent), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Edwards was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $5000 bond.

On April 4, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Rynell Markelle Ware, 20, of Lincoln, NE, on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Ware was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $5000 bond.
Vehicle Accident
On April 4, 2014, at approximately 3:18 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a jackknifed semi on I-80 westbound at the 72 mile marker. A 2013 Kenworth driven by Thomas Batie Heathcote, 57, of Des Moines, IA, was westbound on I-80 when the vehicle came to an icy overpass and lost control. For a time, the rear of the tractor blocked the left lane and part of the right lane of westbound interstate traffic. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $6000.

On April 2, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bradley Leo Ranney, 44, of Massena, IA, on a Magistrate’s warrant for Failure to Appear. Ranney was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $500 bond.

On April 1, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Aaron Lee Latus, 32, of Massena, IA, on a Fremont County warrant. Latus was taken to the Cass County Jail. He was transferred the following day to Fremont County authorities.

On March 31, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jimmy Joe Misner, 53, of Atlantic, IA, on two district court warrants for Failure to Appear for Child Support Hearings. Misner was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $4000 bond.

On March 29, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Amy Jo Hockabout, 34, of Council Bluffs, IA, on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for two counts of felony Forgery and one count of Theft 3rd Degree. Hockabout was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on $10,000 bond.

On March 29, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Danielle Rae Curtis, 22, of Waukee, IA, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Curtis was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released later that day on her own recognizance.
Vehicle Accident
On March 29, 2014, at 11:40 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on 570th Street in Cass County. A 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by Austin Michael Oldenkamp, 18, of Griswold, IA, was northbound on 570th Street when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the west ditch, rolling twice and landing on its wheels. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $7000. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. No passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

On March 26, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Angela Dee Cook, 44, of Atlantic, on charges of OWI 2nd Offense. Once at the jail, Cook was additionally charged with Possession of Electronic Contraband. Cook was booked at the Cass County Jail and released the following day on her own recognizance.

On March 26, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Phillip Christian Hunter, 34, of Cumberland, on a charge of Domestic Abuse 2nd Offense. Hunter was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

On March 24, 2014, Andrew Warren Laughlin, 20, of Atlantic, turned himself in at the Cass County Jail on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Laughlin remains at the Cass County Jail on $3000 bond.

On March 21, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Floyd Marvin Johnson, 49, of Wiota, on a charge of Driving While Revoked. Johnson was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

On March 19, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Russell Robinson, 24, of Massena, IA, on charges of Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, Domestic Abuse Assault 2nd Offense, and Violation of No Contact Order. Robinson was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $7300 bond.

On March 18, 2014, as the result of a traffic stop, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kelsey Ann Muhr, 19, of Exira, IA, on charges of OWI 1st Offense, Minor in Possession of Alcohol, and Reckless Driving. Muhr was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on her own recognizance. Passengers in the vehicle were also charged with Minor in Possession of Alcohol: Dillon Gene Linn, 20, of Atlantic; Gary Allen Carter, 19, of Exira; Abigail Louise Bintner, 18, of Brayton; and Madeline Joanne Bintner, 19, of Atlantic.

On March 17, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jorge Ariel Perez Adams, 21, of Muscatine, IA, on a charge of Driving While Barred. Adams was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on $2000 bond.

On March 15, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher Charles Hargens, 27, on charges of Possession with Intent to Deliver, Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Prohibited Acts, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and OWI 1st Offense; and Brenda Nichole Leah Redler, 30, of Griswold, IA, on charges of Possession with Intent to Deliver, Possession of Contraband in a Jail Facility, Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Prohibited Acts, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Both subjects were taken to the Cass County Jail where Redler is being held on $17,300 bond and Hargens is being held on $14,000 bond as well as a hold for Shelby County.

On March 15, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ehren Michael Mardesen, 29, of Anita, IA, on a charge of Violating a No Contact Order. Mardesen was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

On March 13, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sarah Beth Ewing, 28, of Griswold, IA, on charges of OWI 1st Offense and Child Endangerment. Ewing was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on $3000 bond.
Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association membership appeals
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office wants the county to know that while the Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association appeals that are coming out in the mail are not coming directly from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the mailings are indeed legitimate.

Individuals choosing to join the voluntary program can do so for as little as $25, while businesses can show their support for a minimum of $50 contribution. The funding provides critically important technical resources, training, and legislative support on key criminal justice issues.

On March 12, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Eva Marie Coatney, 38, of Atlantic, IA, on a District Court Warrant for Failure to Appear for a Debtor’s Exam. Coatney was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on her own recognizance.

On March 11, 2014, Jacky Ray Walters, 27, of Atlantic, IA, turned himself in at the Cass County Jail on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Walters was booked in at the jail and released later that day on $7500 bond.

On March 10, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Robert John Rasmussen, 54, of Massena, IA, on a Department of Criminal Investigation warrant for Failure to Comply with the Sex Offender Registry. Rasmussen was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $2000 bond.

On March 9, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard Randall Eatwell, 39, of Des Moines, IA, following a pursuit that ended in Audubon County. Eatwell was wanted on a Department of Corrections warrant for Parole Violation, and he was additionally charged in Cass County with Felony Eluding and OWI 1st Offense. Eatwell remains at the Cass County Jail without bond on the Parole Violation.

On March 9, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jennifer Sue Alexander, 37, of Griswold, IA, on a charge of Disorderly Conduct. Alexander was taken to the Cass County Jail where she pled guilty before the magistrate and was released later that day.

On March 8, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ronald Eugene Keller, 51, of Massena, IA, on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. Keller was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $1000 bond.

On March 4, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tammy Darleen Flathers, 44, of Cumberland, IA, on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear to Serve Jail Time. Flathers was taken to the Cass County Jail where she is being held until the completion of her jail time.
Vehicle Accident
On March 2, 2014, at 7:50 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on 710th Street. A 2004 Ford F150 pickup owned and driven by Joshua Brian Behnken, 22, of Massena, IA, was southbound on 710th Street when the driver lost control. The vehicle rolled once into the east ditch and landed on its wheels. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $7,000. Behnken was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

On March 2, 2014, at 4:53 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on White Pole Road in Wiota. A 2005 Jaguar owned and driven by Bryson Thomas West, 19, of Atlantic, IA, was eastbound on White Pole Road when the car hit a large snow drift in the road and lost control, running through a fence. West was transported to CCMH via Medivac. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3,500; damage to the fence is estimated at $500.

On March 2, 2014, as the result of a traffic stop on a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Pottawattamie County, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joseph K. Pardew, 43, of Omaha, on a charge of Theft 2nd Degree; and Benjamin Lee Foote, 31, of Crescent, IA, on charges of Theft 2nd Degree, Driving While Barred, and Driving Under Suspension. Both men were taken to the Cass County Jail. Pardew is being held on $5000; Foote is being held on $7000.

On March 1, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sinead Lea Edwards, 23, of Oakland, IA, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Edwards was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released later that day on her own recognizance.

On February 27, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Aimee Jo Nicholson, 37, of Des Moines, IA, on a District Court warrant for Ongoing Criminal Conduct. Nicholson was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was subsequently transported to Iowa Medical and Classification Center.

On February 24, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Trent Matthew Suhr, 30, of Walnut, IA, on charges of OWI 4th Offense, Driving While Barred, two counts of Driving While Revoked, and one count of Driving Under Suspension. Suhr was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $5000 bond.

On February 22, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jonathan David Hart, 31, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Hart was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On February 20, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Barry Dean Schmidt, 53, of Massena, IA, on charges of Possession with Intent to Deliver (Methamphetamines), Failure to Have Drug Tax Stamp, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Schmidt was also arrested on a Cass County Sheriff’s Office warrant for Failure to Appear to Serve Time. Schmidt was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $25,000 bond.
Vehicle Accident
On February 17, 2014, at 4:52 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two vehicle accident on Highway 71 at Lansing Road in Cass County. A 2001 Jeep Wrangler owned and driven by Myles Jeffery Hetrick, 23, of Atlantic, IA, was southbound on Highway 71 and attempting to turn onto Lansing Road when it was struck in the rear by a 2006 Dodge pickup driven by Robert Lee Jacobson, 59, of Fontanelle. No injuries were reported. Damage to Hetrick’s vehicle is estimated at $7,000; damage to Jacobson’s vehicle is estimated at $6,000. Jacobson was cited with Failure to Stop within Assured Clear Distance.

On February 15, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Shawn Joseph Williamson, 36, of Anita, IA, on a charge of Driving Under Suspension. Williamson was taken to the Cass County Jail where he pled guilty and was released the following day.

On February 15, 2014, as the result of a traffic stop at the 67 mile marker on I-80 westbound, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Amanda Lynn Mesler, 32, of Sparks, NV, on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; and Benjamin Michael Fielder, 46, of Wadsworth, NV, on two counts of Possession of a controlled substance and one count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Mesler and Fielder were taken to the Cass County Jail where both were released later that day – Mesler on $2000 bond and Fielder on $3000 bond.

On February 14, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Douglas Allen Howard, 56, of Atlantic, IA, on charges of OWI 2nd Offense and Driving While Revoked. Howard was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $3000 bond.
Vehicle Accident
On February 11, 2014, at 1:40 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on 550th Street six miles north of Griswold. A 1994 Nissan Maxima owned and driven by Brenda Lee Seymour, 47, of Atlantic, IA, was turning left into a drive on 550th Street when it was struck by a 2003 Dodge Neon driven by Cindy Daline Guffey, 17, of Elliott, IA, which had attempted to pass on the left side of Seymour’s vehicle. Damage to Seymour’s vehicle is estimated at $900; damage to Guffey’s vehicle is estimated at $900. No injuries were reported. Guffey was cited for Passing Contrary to Highway Markings.

On February 8, 2014, at 9:10 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle weather-related accident near Olive Street and Echo Road in Cass County. A 2009 Nissan Altima owned and driven by Diane Marie Nosbisch, 55, of Menlo, IA, was northbound on Olive Street when the driver lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered roadway and entered the west ditch. The driver reported minor injuries. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $4500.

On February 8, 2014, at 10:52 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle weather-related accident on Tucson Road ¼ mile east of 620th Street. A 2002 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Sharon Renee Allison, 46, of Red Oak, IA, spun out on the snowy roadway and entered the south ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $1500.

On February 2, 2014, at 4:00 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on 4th Street in Marne. A 2006 Cadillac driven by Zachary Taylor Hemmingsen was southbound on 4th Street when the vehicle struck a guardrail, causing the guardrail to move into the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to Hemmingsen’s vehicle is estimated at $3500; damage to the guardrail is estimated at $2000. Hemmingsen was cited with Failure to Maintain Control.
Investigation - Burglaries
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports that on February 7th/8th, 2014, subject(s) unknown entered the outer door of the Anita Laundromat and Carwash and attempted to pry the interior door open as well as the dollar bill change machine, causing about $1300 in damages. On January 22nd/23rd, 2014, a burglary was also attempted at this location which caused about $300 damage. The Cass County Sheriffs’ Office is asking the public to report any information they may have in this matter to the Crimestoppers Hotline at 800-233-3336. On February 8, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Zachary Alan Frank, 31, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of Driving While Barred. Frank was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On February 6, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Eric Jason Ostrander, 36, of Atlantic, IA, on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine. Ostrander was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On February 5, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sydney Kay Darling, 24, of Anita, IA, on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident. Darling was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on $300 cash bond.

On January 31, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bryce Charles Elihue Baker, 19, of Atlantic, IA, on a District Court warrant for Violation of Probation. Baker was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $10,000 bond.

On January 30, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office charged Kyler Jay O’Brien, 20, with Burglary 3rd Degree (D Felony) in regards to a report from September 25, 2012 in Anita, IA, wherein the victim reported her house broken into and her purse gone through. O’Brien remains at the Cass County Jail on theft and drug charges from January 3, 2014. Including the new charge, he is being held on $13,000 bond.

On January 30, 2014, Johnathan Tyler McAlpin, 21, of Red Oak, IA, turned himself in at the Cass County Jail on a Cass County Sheriff’s Office warrant for Eluding (D Felony), OWI 1st Offense (Serious), and Driving Under Suspension (Simple). McAlpin was booked and released on his own recognizance later that day.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports that two male CAM High School students have been charged in Juvenile Court with Theft 2nd Degree (D Felony) in the theft of a vehicle from the CAM High School parking lot on January 28, 2014.
Recovered Vehicle
On January 28, 2014, at 9:12 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle stolen from the parking lot of CAM High School in Anita. The vehicle, a 1998 Ford Escort owned by April Annette McAfee, 39, of Anita, was recovered this morning in a ditch near 640th and Fayette Road in Cass County. There are no suspects in this incident at this time.

On January 27, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michelle Lynn Burton, 45, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of Theft 2nd Degree (D Felony). Burton was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on her own recognizance.

On January 23, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lacey Faye Dorris, 26, of Atlantic, IA, on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for OWI 1st Offense (Serious) and three counts of Child Endangerment (Aggravated). Dorris was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on $7000 bond.

On January 23, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kellie Lynn Thies, 40, of Avoca, IA, on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for Theft 5th Degree. Thies was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released later that day on $500 bond.

On January 23, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident near the Audubon/Cass County line in Cass County. A 2000 Dodge driven by Timothy Orville Welch, 36, of Red Oak, IA, was westbound on 350th Street/Akron Road when the driver ran a stop sign and swerved to avoid the tree in the middle of the road at that location. The vehicle rolled onto its side in the west ditch of 710th Street. A female passenger, Louisa Fay Homan, 31, of Red Oak, was transported to Cass County Memorial Hospital via Anita Rescue. Three children in the vehicle were uninjured. As a result of the investigation, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Welch on charges of OWI 3rd Offense (D Felony), three counts of Child Endangerment (Aggravated), Driving While Barred (Aggravated), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Serious), and Driving While Revoked (Serious). Welch was also cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign, No Proof of Insurance, and Failure to Maintain Control. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains on $14,000 bond.

On January 22, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Daniel L. Hart, 24, of Fort Dodge, IA, on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear. Hart was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remained until his sentencing and release on January 28th.

On January 19, 2014, at 12:06 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported a one-vehicle accident on Highway 48 at 550th Street. A 2007 Ford Explorer owned and driven by Becky Jo Brockman, 39, of Elliott, IA, was found in a ditch along Highway 48 by a patrolling deputy. The driver was uninjured. Upon investigation, the driver was arrested for OWI and cited for Failure to Maintain Control. Brockman was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released later that day on her own recognizance. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $5,000.
Vehicle Accident
On January 18, 2014, at 1:10 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-vehicle accident on Buck Creek Road at Glacier Road. A 1993 Buick LeSabre driven by Daniel Robert Schmeling, 19, of Atlantic, IA, was northbound on Buck Creek Road when the driver lost control and the vehicle entered the west ditch, rolling onto its top. Schmeling and one passenger, Skylar Richard-Curtis Breeling, 18, of Atlantic, were able to climb out a vehicle window. A second passenger, Jesse Keegen Ihrke, 14, of Atlantic, was partially ejected from the vehicle. The driver refused medical treatment; both Breeling and Ihrke were transferred to CCMH via Medivac, and Ihrke was subsequently transferred to University of Nebraska Medical Center. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3,500. The incident remains under investigation.

On January 16, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Leo Alan Edwards, 34, of Pacific Junction, IA, on charges of OWI 1st Offense, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving Under Suspension. Edwards was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.
Investigation - Burglaries
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the report of two church burglaries that occurred in rural Griswold. Sometime between January 6th and January 9th, person(s) unknown entered the Noble Center United Methodist Church at 630th and Victoria Roads in Griswold by prying the lock from the back door. Missing items were not initially reported. Also, between January 7th and January 8th, person(s) unknown entered the St John’s United Church of Christ on Upland Road in Griswold and took a small amount of cash and a Keurig coffee maker and coffee pods. Page County Sheriff’s Office and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office have also each reported several church break-ins in their counties in and around this time period. Anyone with any information regarding these break-ins is encouraged to contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at 712-243-2206.

On January 14, 2014, at 7:23 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on 620th Street at the intersection of Memphis Road. A 2002 Olds Alero driven by Chelsea Leeann Adams, 16, of Atlantic, IA, was northbound on 620th when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it entered the east ditch, rolling several times and ejecting the driver. The driver was transported to CCMH via Medivac and subsequently taken to University of Nebraska Medical Center. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3500. The accident remains under investigation.

A 1998 Dodge Dakota owned and driven by Austin Leroy Petty, 18, of Atlantic, was discovered upside down in the west ditch. The driver refused medical treatment. Upon investigation into the accident, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Petty on charges of OWI 1st Offense and Minor in Possession of Alcohol. Petty was also cited for Failure to Maintain Control. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3500.

On December 30, 2013, as the result of a traffic stop, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested David Michael Boggs, 43, of Atlantic, on charges of OWI 1st Offense and Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Offense; and Chad Allen Sharp, 35, on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. Both men were taken to the Cass County Jail. Sharp was released the following day on $1000 bond. Boggs remains at the Cass County Jail on $6000 bond.

Both men were taken to the Cass County Jail. Carpenter was released the following day on his own recognizance; Shelby was released the following day on $1,000 bond.

On December 18, 2013, at 11:50 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on Wichita Road, ¼ mile west of 680th Street, in Cass County. A 2004 Dodge 2500 owned and driven by Dayton Michael Amdor, 22, of Cumberland, IA, was eastbound on Wichita Road, and a 2007 GMC Sierra driven by Dylan Thomas Amdor, 17, of Cumberland, IA, was westbound on Wichita Road, when the vehicles collided at the crest of a hill. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued. Damage to Dayton Amdor’s vehicle is estimated at $20,000; damage to Dylan Amdor’s vehicle is estimated at $25,000. Damage to a fence which was struck in the incident is $300.

On December 14, 2013, at 11:25 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on I-80 at the 65 mile marker. A 2003 Hyundai Sonata driven by James William Garrow, 62, of Davenport, IA, was westbound on I-80 when a deer ran north across the road and struck the front of the vehicle. The deer went through the windshield of the vehicle and crushed the roof area. Garrow and a passenger, Nancy Jean Herberg, were transported to CCMH via Medivac and Anita Rescue. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $10,000.

Dillavou was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was subsequently charged with Possession of Contraband. Dillavou remains at the Cass County Jail on $40,000 bond.

On December 10, 2013, at 3:50 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on White Pole Road in Wiota. A 1999 Toyota Camry driven by Sydney Kay Darling, 24, of Anita, IA, was eastbound on White Pole Road when the driver lost control, striking a sign and jumping a terrace. The vehicle landed on its wheels and rolled into a field. Upon arrival, no one was with the vehicle. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $5,000; damage to the sign is estimated at $1000. The incident remains under investigation.

A 2006 Chevy K2500 owned and driven by Simon Dale Jensen, 25, of Adel, IA, was westbound on Highway 92 approximately ½ mile east of 690th Street when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid striking deer in the roadway, entering the north ditch and flipping the vehicle onto its top. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $10,000. Jensen was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

A 2005 Sterling semi driven by Todd Allen VanWinkle, 52, of Des Moines, IA, was northbound on Olive Street when the driver lost control on the ice-covered roadway and entered the east ditch. VanWinkle was transported to CCMH via Medivac. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $15,000.

A 2001 Ford F350 owned and driven by Tanner Paul Preston, 27, of Atlantic, IA, was eastbound on Highway 92 when the driver lost control, rolling approximately five times into the north ditch. Preston was transported to CCMH via Griswold Rescue and subsequently transported to University of Nebraska Medical Center via Air Ambulance. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $18,000. The accident remains under investigation.

On December 12, 2013, at 4:02 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on I-80 eastbound at the Marne interchange. A 2007 semi driven by Robert Alan Patterson, 48, of Aplington, IA, was eastbound on I-80 when the driver fell asleep and drifted to the right, striking a guardrail and passing beneath the overpass. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $7,500; damage to the guardrail is estimated at $1000. Patterson was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

On December 5, 2013, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Johnny Wayne Robinson, 37, of Chatsworth, GA, and Jonathan Tyler Newborn, 21, of Fruitsworth, AL, on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance. An additional subject, Elmo Dwayne Lykins, 39, of West Liberty, KY, was arrested on charges of Manufacturing, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. All three men were taken to the Cass County Jail. Robinson was released on $1000 bond later that day; Newborn remains incarcerated on $1000 bond and Lykins remains incarcerated on $10,000 bond.

On December 4, 2013, at 2:03 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a hit & run accident on Main Street in Lewis. A 2012 Chevy Cruze owned by Thomas Fritz of Lewis was parked on Main Street in Anita when it was struck sometime between 5:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $2000. No injuries were reported.

On December 1, 2013, at 8:18 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on Highway 92 west of Highway 71. A White Ford F350 pickup driven by Tanner Paul Preston, 27, of Atlantic, IA, was eastbound on Highway 92 when the driver lost control of the truck, which rolled approximately six times, coming to rest in the north ditch. Preston was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported by Griswold Rescue to CCMH, and subsequently transported by helicopter to University of Nebraska Medical Center. The vehicle is considered a total loss. The incident remains under investigation.

On November 21, 2013, at 12:30 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a road-condition-related one-vehicle accident on Marne Road in Cass County. A 1999 Ford Ranger owned and driven by Dennis Holtz, 66, of Walnut, IA, was westbound on Marne Road when his vehicle slid off the roadway and went into the south ditch. Holtz was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital via Medivac. Damage to his vehicle is estimated at $5000.

On November 21, 2013, at 12:26 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle road-condition-related accident on I-80 at the 60 mile marker. A 2002 Toyota owned and driven by Lillian Phillips, 34, of Lincoln, NE, was eastbound on I-80 when the vehicle lost control on the icy bridge and slid across the median just past the bridge, striking a westbound 2001 Peterbilt semi driven by Donald Nichols, 33, of Nebraska. Phillips was transported to CCMH via Medivac; her 20-month-old son was also transferred to CCMH via Medivac and subsequently transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha. Nichols was not injured. Damage to Phillips’ vehicle is estimated at $10,000; damage to Nichols’ vehicle is estimated at $8000.
Cass County K9 Team Wins Award - In October 2013, Cass County Sheriff’s Office K9 teams Deputy Kyle Quist with K9 Vader and Deputy Corey Larsen with K9 Mufasa attended the Heart of America Police K9 Association certification and competition in Des Moines, Iowa.
