Arrest
On January 15, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Nicholas Dean Anderson, 23, of Atlantic, IA, on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Anderson was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on $1,000 bond.
Arrest
On January 14, 2015, Jeremy Eugene Jameson, 41, of Anita, IA, turned himself in to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office on a Pottawattamie County warrant. He was transferred to Pottawattamie County authorities later that day.

On January 13, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jacob Allen Cochran, 33, of Red Oak, IA, and Jodi Lynn Brookshire, 26, of Atlantic, IA. Cochran was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; Brookshire was charged with Driving While Barred. Both were taken to the Cass County Jail where they were released the following day on their own recognizances.

On January 13, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joshua James Mullen, 35, of Atlantic, IA, on a District Court warrant for Violation of Probation. Mullen was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $20,000 bond.

On January 11, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher Anthony Jason Castillo, 28, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of Driving While Barred. Castillo was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $2,000 bond.
Arrest
On January 10, 2015, as the result of a traffic stop by an Iowa Department of Natural Resources office, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard Joseph Foley, 56, and Kenneth Paul Foley, Jr., 55, of Carroll, IA. Kenneth Foley, Jr., was charged with OWI 2nd Offense, and also charged by the Department of Natural Resources for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Richard Foley was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Contraband within a Jail Facility. Both men bonded the following day on $5,000 bond each.
Vehicle Accident
On January 4, 2015, at approximately 6:02 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on Highway 71 near the intersection of Highway 91. A 1999 Chevy Lumina owned and driven by Neil Schmidt, 50, of Griswold, was southbound on Highway 71 and attempted to turn left into a driveway shortly before the intersection of Highways 71 and 92, when it was struck in the rear by a 2001 Ford Focus owned and driven by Pamela Alberta Heiny, 44, of Massena, IA. Both parties refused medical attention. Damage to Schmidt’s vehicle is estimated at $750; damage to Heiny’s vehicle is estimated at $3,000.

On January 4, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ryan David O’Leary, 28, of Carroll, IA, on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear to Serve Jail Time. O’Leary was taken to the Cass County Jail where he will remain held until service of his court ordered jail time was completed.

As the result of a traffic stop on January 3, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Terry Lee Ranney, 56, of Massena, IA, and Ronald Eugene Keller, 52, of Massena, IA, on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana) 2nd Offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Both were taken to the Cass County Jail where they were released the following day on their own recognizances.

On January 3, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Alexander Paul Dvorak, 25, of Atlantic, IA, on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Dvorak was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $20,000 bond.

On January 3, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Keith E. Zarbano, 40, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Zarbano was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On January 2, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Benjamin Jesse Galles, 23, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of Driving While Revoked. Galles was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.
DEER, ANTLERS AND WILDLIFE SEIZED FROM CASS COUNTY RESIDENCE

ATLANTIC, Iowa - Two Cass County men are under suspicion for allegedly possessing deer and other wildlife illegally after officers followed a trail that began with an illegal dumping complaint.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a call on December 29 about someone dumping litter on the side of a level B road. During the investigation, deputies found hides from four deer, a raccoon and badger carcass.
Information uncovered from the trash pointed officers to Sean Chamberlin, 23, and John Chamberlin, Jr., 47, of rural Atlantic.
The Sheriff and an officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources were granted access to the property on Dec. 30, and seized 111 deer, including an untagged deer; a badger and a raccoon, all allegedly taken illegally, and a bow and an unfilled archery deer tag as evidence.
Most of the deer that were seized were deer antlers. The case remains under investigation and charges are pending. Wildlife violations are simple misdemeanors.
“This is a good example of the public helping law enforcement by making a simple phone call, and different agencies working together in order to make a case,” said Sheriff Darby McLaren.
State Conservation Officer Brian Smith said the person who made the initial phone call deserves thanks.
“We would not have had the opportunity to make this case without that phone call,” Smith said.
The Atlantic Police Department assisted with the investigation.

On January 1, 2015, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jason William Sheldahl, 43, of Boone, IA, on a charge of Driving While Revoked. Sheldahl was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.
Vehicle Accident
On December 31, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident on Richland Road at Massena. A 2008 Ford F250 owned and driven by Rick Emmert Larsen, 56, of Lewis, IA, was westbound on Highway 92. A 2003 Chevy Impala driven by Shelby Deann McKinley, 28, of Wiota, IA, attempted to pass Larsen’s vehicle, making contact with the left front side of Larsen’s vehicle. No injuries were reported. Damage to McKinley’s vehicle is estimated at $1,000; damage to Larsen’s vehicle is estimated at $500. McKinley was cited for Unsafe Passing.

On December 30, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Travis Giles Warren, 30, of Council Bluffs, IA, on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear. Warren was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $10,000 bond.

On December 27, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bradley Leo Ranney, 45, of Massena, IA, on a charge of Driving While Suspended. Ranney was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $300 bond.

On December 17, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Marlin Eugene Rossell, 70, of Lewis, IA, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Rossell was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

On December 15, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Magbeth Contreras-Vazquez, 32, of St. Paul, MN, on a charge of OWI 1st degree; and Juan Fernandez Polanco, 33, of Burnsville, MN, on a charge of Open Container Passenger. Both men were taken to the Cass County Jail. Contreras-Vazquez was released later that day on $1,000 bond; Fernandez Polanco pled guilty and was released later that day.
Public Notice
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office would like the public to be aware of a scam recently reported. The reporting party had received a letter claiming to be from Cigna Dental/Health & Life Insurance stating she had won a sweepstakes. The letter also included a check, and a request for the party to put the check in her bank account and send funds back to the sweepstakes to cover the cost of fees. While Cigna is the name of a valid company, this letter is a scam. When a company asks you to send them money in order to receive money, this is always a scam.

On December 14, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Chad Barnes, 42, of Atlantic, IA, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Barnes was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On December 11, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jeffery Leroy Carpenter, 31, of Atlantic, IA, was arrested on a District Court warrant for Failure to Serve Jail Time. Carpenter was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held until sentence is served.
Response to Call
On December 11, 2014, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Cass County deputies were called to a report of a car in the ditch at 665th & White Pole Rd. Upon arrival, deputies found David Gatrel, 49, of Wiota, IA, deceased of self-inflicted injuries.
Vehicle Accident
On December 5, 2014, at approximately 2:10 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a 2012 Dodge Ram that left the roadway south of Atlantic on 620th Street, striking a fence and some other items near a private residence. The sound of the crash woke the homeowners. Upon investigation, one individual was detained temporarily by the Atlantic Police Department. This incident remains under investigation by the APD.
Vehicle Accident
On December 3, 2014, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a trailer that struck a power pole. A trailer, loaded with a corn head, broke free from a K350 utility truck driven by Anthony Lynn Behrens, 43, of Harlan, IA, on 620th Street in Cass County. The trailer and corn head went into the east ditch and struck a wire fence and a power pole, snapping it off at the ground. No injuries were reported. Damage to the pole is estimated at $1000; damage to the wire fence is estimated at $250. Damage to the corn head is estimated at $3000. No citations were issued.
Vehicle Accident
On December 2, 2014, at 12:30 a.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a single vehicle accident on I-80 westbound at the 72 mile marker. A 2009 Freightliner owned and driven by Anatolie Enachii, 28, of Romeoville, IL, was westbound on I-80 when the driver fell asleep and the vehicle struck a rail and bridge, left the roadway, and entered the ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $10,000; damage to the rail and bridge is estimated at $500. Enachii was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

On December 1, 2014, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Trent Matthew Suhr, 31, of Walnut, IA, on a District Court warrant for Failure to Appear. Suhr was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains.
